Those types of anti-piracy measures won't work anymore. Back in the day, you could just copy and play, now you have to manipulate code to trick the game into thinking your copy is legitimate. It would just trick the 'screw with the player' DRM as well.

Or trick the player into thinking they tricked the game?

Developers have to program their games to act like those "haunted video game" creepy pastas when pirated.
Oh god, imagine if Nintendo did this with a Pokemon game.
Creepy Black could be real if they did so.

Command and Conquer 2: Red Alert had an anti-piracy measure kind of like this. After 30 seconds of gameplay, all of the player's bases would combust and asplode.
