if it's a wired controller (you said it was).. according to like, every source i can find, as long as you downloaded the drivers from microsoft (what snot2 linked) you should be able to just plug it in and play, it should appear on your devices list
simply saying they "don't work right" really doesn't help someone trying to figure out the problem. is there an error? nothing's working? have you tried configuring the controls?

ok, what game are you using?
try going in dev console (tilde; you have to enable it by advanced options) and typing 'exec 360controller'and to reverse it type 'exec undo360controller'what it does is it sets up the controls for the controller and if you have the drivers properly installed it should work.
