Author Topic: My computer is possibly broken (Read 1143 times)

Well, I just got to Kentucky a few minutes ago, and tried to start up my laptop. It was a black screen for a while, and then it said nothing would start (including explorer.exe; yikes). I then decided to start it up in safe mode with networking, and everything seems to work. Now I'm running a virus scan and checking my drivers. Any ideas on what might be happening?

I had this problem with vista before.

Would it get to login screen but stop there for about 30 seconds and display an error that the logon ui could not start or something like that?

I just restart and everything is fine.

I tried to open the task manager to manually start it, but even the task manager refused to open. I'm still running driver checks right now to see if I'm missing anything. The fact that I can still run in safe mode with networking leads me to believe that it's something else.

Update: I tried restarting a few times with the same result. After the virus scan finishes I'll do some hard disk error checking and then try to run in normal mode.

Rootkit.0Acess could be it.
It tends to get rid of nearly everything if you don't get rid of it fast, it all starts with internet browser redirects.

Well stuff. I think we know now. I opened internet explorer a while ago to look at a .gif and it redirected me. So I guess my virus scan might find it while it's inactive.

I didn't do it on purpose. It opened automatically when I clicked the .gif.

Well if when you where on the internet whenever you tried browsing, you could get redirected at random times, you got Rootkit.0Acess, and it seems your system is far off from repair, you should have tried taking care of it when you noticed the redirects, only thing left to do is reinstall windows, I know I could repair my system but its always better to just reinstall to make sure there is nothing left behind.
Also if you have SD Cards or Flashdrives/External Hardrives you have connected to your system, they are most likely infected and if you connected them to another system...well you know, it also happens if you reinstall and reconnect those devices.

There was no preemptive action to be taken, because there was no issue at the moment. Also, I think if I can remove the malware while it's inactive, repair disk errors, and start it over. I still have a glimmer of hope that it can be saved.
