You also have to take into account that animals could have evolved over time so maybe they weren't quite as large. Would still probably eat a lot of food.

According to the bible, all people decended from noah and his sons. This would explain why there are so many variants around the world telling of a man who is called by some god telling him to get himself and his family and some animals onto a boat because some huge flood is coming.
This somewhat disproves the theory of a local flood, as many cultures around the world have this sort of story.
