I'm afraid microsoft is smart enough to use encryption (same with valve), I'd rather not have my parents credit card protected by an entire firewall of text documents

They're not getting hacked, they're getting their servers DDOS'ed. This means people send many packets of information that become too much for the server to handle, so it goes down.

It is possible for Microsoft to get hacked, just not as easily as Sony.
