Author Topic: 'Permission Bricks' - Allow players to build on/in an artificial map  (Read 1632 times)

I came up with this idea yesterday while playing on that California map by GSF(?) with SirLancelot. Thought it was cool and could perhaps be of use in v21.

To illustrate:

As the sun sets, two explorers find themselves at the bottom of an enormous crater. It's too late to regroup with the main party, and they are going to have to set up a small camp to make it through the night.
However, the map that these role-players are playing on is made out of bricks - including the ground where they would like to make their camp. So, they pull out their brick selector tools and place permission bricks.
Within the confines of these bricks, the explorers are able to complete their camp setup and hunker down for the night, even though they don't own the base that they are building on.

To reiterate:

Permission bricks (in lack of a better name) would allow for role-players to build their own camps/forts/defenses/spawns/etc within a map that they do not have permission to build on, and without the trust of the owner.

These bricks would work like water bricks and zone cubes in the way that you could place them in a way that overlaps other bricks, yet they cannot overlap other permission bricks.

Possible associated RTB Prefs:

  • Permission brick size (or there could always just be a number of sizes to chose from in the brick menu)
  • Amount of permission bricks a client could place

Addressing concerns:

  • If you don't want players to spawn weapons, don't give them wrenches.

So yeah. Possible? Plausible? Additional thoughts?

The build zones thing I made is really really similar to this. I could easily add it in a later version, as another brick

Edit: forgot to say, this is a brilliant idea

do it

do it
I will
Don't hold your breath though, I have to finish the original mod first

Couldn't someone just place one of the bricks on anyones bricks and build on their bricks than?

Yes, but these would ideally be used in enclosed terrain environments that players would not be able to escape from.

If there was no kind of roof they could use these bricks to escape.

If there was no kind of roof they could use these bricks to escape.
They would be restricted to building within the confines of the bricks, and the amount of these bricks that they could use would be limited.

How's that coming along?

It's awaiting approval, still
But I have some issues I need to resolve asap with it

What exactly do they do?

Slightly similar to this

On a server, only admins can place zones called "Build" or "Anti-Build" zones. There is an RTB pref that determines whether or not other players can build outside of zones. If the option is ticked, all non-admins will not be able to build anything outside of zones. The only place they can build is inside a "Build" zone. If the option is not checked, non-admins can build wherever they like, excepting "Anti-Build" zones.
