Author Topic: A decent space map...  (Read 28077 times)

Huh,I started to think you abandoned the project.
nope.

School started, things got in the way.

Project is on schedule for an october 28th release.

NOOO!

That's the end of the month!

If my reasoning for the date is correct then trust me, it will be well worth the wait.

Heres my idea for a decent spacemap.

First off, and most importantly, is the skybox. It very easy to tell that the stars are on a 2D surface (the box in 'skybox') because the stars are pushed closer together and become dimmer near the corners of the box. I believe that will trial and error and perhaps some nice photoshop wizardry one could make a good looking skybox that could cancel out the squareness of it. Is there a feature in Photoshop that would allow someone to apply a 'fisheye' effect or similiar thing to an image?
I have managed to do this with a full blown top of the line copy of Photoshop. I don't know how low one can go and still have this available.  I will be available to upload the sky latter this week.  I was going to try to give the skybox earth's actual star's, but I ran out of time and hope it will do...

On another note, I have webspace and am wondering if you would like a temporary FTP account to upload the map to and distribute as you please.  This way people wouldn't have to deal with crappy upload agents, and allow faster downloads.  The bandwidth and harddrive space wouldn't bother me, since I haven't gone above 1% of usage yet....

Sounds interesting.

I'd love to see the sky in action. If it works better than the current one then we will use yours (with credit of course).

As for the offer for downloading. Sounds intriguing. Would downloaders have to create an account or would it be simple point and click?

The sky looks great, and will be a free resource for all map makers...

As for downloading, I just want to basically give you free webspace since this map looks great and I don't want people complaining about how the download doesn't work, but how they got the map and love it...

edit:I got my flash drive with the sky on it back, so packaging and uploading...

Not so far, everything is on schedule.

Great!

What kinda secrets are there gonna be? Craters? Watermark?

Don't forget the "Eagle" and American flag on the moon. ;)

If I said then they wouldn't be secret.

Nice map so far.  I can't wait to get to download it.

I remember that earlier you were discussing how it would be impossible to add water to the map without it covering the whole map.  However, a while ago I saw a build (detailed city build) where someone managed to fill a specific area with water (in a pool and in a river going through the middle of the city).  As far as I could tell it was normal water, just not covering the whole map at a certain hight.  Underneath the build and the water was a subway, but it wasn't underwater.  I'm not sure how they did it, or if it would be possible to use it for your map though.

Lol, thats extremely easy, i did it all the time in vannila, you just lower the waters variables of size a bit and change the type :D done

if you want to know how to make zero gravity, pm me. i figured it out ;D

Ever Try making water -1 -1 1? :D Hilarity ensues!
