Author Topic: A decent space map...  (Read 28126 times)

Heres my idea for a decent spacemap.

First off, and most importantly, is the skybox. It very easy to tell that the stars are on a 2D surface (the box in 'skybox') because the stars are pushed closer together and become dimmer near the corners of the box. I believe that will trial and error and perhaps some nice photoshop wizardry one could make a good looking skybox that could cancel out the squareness of it. Is there a feature in Photoshop that would allow someone to apply a 'fisheye' effect or similiar thing to an image?

My second suggestion is that the playing field (where people spawn and build) be a set of asteriods placed at random heights and positions around the map. These would be interiors.

Set a huge physical zone around the map as large as possible that sets gravity to 1/2 or something.

Cool features that could be added:

>Shooting stars
>Planets
>Meteors
>sun

Please give feedback on idea with any other suggestions/offers to help/praise along with it.

NOW RELEASED!

I remember a RTB map that had planets, but you would simply build on top of them. Ill look into making walkthrough Interiers to see if i can make a planet and try it out.

i remember that too but they were like big rocks with space inside them

I love the G-Mod Solar system map, and I think this would be great too. If only the G-mod planets were bigger!

I'd love to see a solar system map.

I had Gmod space map in mind when typing my post above.

I think it 'might' be possible. Heres how I invision it. The planet bit that you walk/build on would be an interior that is a semicircle. The planet you see from the outside would be made from a large DTS made without a collision mesh. That way it would look like a planet from the outside but function as a flat surface on the inside.

Summary: Planet consists of semicircle interior surrounded by DTS sphere with no collision mesh.

To me the more important thing is to get stars that don't look so flat as they do in the skybox. Hence why I suggested some kind of fisheye effect be applied to the texture.

I may have a go at making the stuff I and others have said above because it sounds really cool. :)

Reactor, I already though of what you just posted and im looking into it  :cookieMonster:

You mean my idea with the Interiors and DTS shapes used as planets? Go ahead. I hope it works.

ok, I did a test using a custom interior (a sphere cut in half in Constructor) and a DTS sphere made in MS3D.

The interior has grass and dirt textures on it and works fine. After placing the enlarged DTS around it, it worked perfectly.

As of now its just a simple white sphere (talking about DTS) but if/when someone shows me how/makes one it will have an earth texture.

Moon is also ready but needs its own DTS sphere with moon texture.

Can anyone please provide a simple DTS sphere with 6 stacks and 12 slices taht has a moon texture and another for the earth. I will take care of scaling and positioning inside the world editor.

I would show a video of it but its not very exciting as of yet.

Another Idea I have running around my head is to use a second DTS shape with inverted faces to act as an atmosphere so when you are on earth you cannot see outside the 'atmosphere' into space just as we can't in daylight. This will probably lead to 2 versions of the map, one day and one night.

Some more info for those interested...

Planets are obviously scaleable in F11 so they can be any size desired. In my map I hope to make the earth large enough to build a reasonable city on it, not just a little bunker as some might imagine.

First version will have the earth and the moon and probably the sun. Other planets and features will be added later.

I can't see a decent solar system mod in Blockland without major lag. :(

how do we send people into space?

I don't see lag as being a problem. I mean, I'm not using emitters or anything. I got aprox. 300 FPS with the current build which now includes full sized earth map.

Anyway, heres an update.

I have made a 'dedicated' map which I am now calling "The planets" for now.

It has a space skybox which I think came with the forest map. I'd rather spend time making a playable map than making new skyboxes. Full credit for sky goes to him/her.

Earth now has a temporary green and blue texture in place for the inside and out. These will be upgraded later when someone makes one or shows me how.

Spawn point has been moved and sized to have players spawn on earth.

Features to come soon...

>Moon. Same as earth but smaller and has no atmosphere. Will hopefully have a gravity modifier.
>Sun. Using TGE sun thing
>Other planets.
>Asteroids
>Making planets build-on-able.
>Better textures
>Terrain features. Mountains, craters, caves ect.

I'm uploading a video showing the first version soon.

Also, if BS sees this, please move it to mapping discussion section please as this has turned into a project and is no longer a suggestion. :)

Well, either have jets on or make a space vehicle (looks at kaje) and fly there.

For now there will be no damage effects for being in space but that may come later. There will almost certainly be gravity effects such as on the moon and in space.

Good question though.

You can! :)

I really need someone to make some better DTS spheres with decent earth/moon/other planets textures. If you can do that, it would be great. Just make sure they are not exported with a collision mesh.

I may also need/allow others to make their own interior files for planets so that we can get some variety. As of now all planets and moons ect. are all just flat on the top which is great for building but isnt very exciting. I would love to see/add some features to them. I'm trying to find a good way of adding craters to surface of moon, may use some kind of sphere perversion method.

Anyway, if you wanna help just say.

Video coming soon...uploading now.
