but as for now I think it's basically just nothingness. Loss of consciousness, so it's like you're sleeping only you'll never wake up or have dreams.

I believe an afterlife is very unlikely. Since the brain stops functioning, you won't be capable to think/dream/"live" at all. I don't really think there is a "soul" that lives on.
The thought scares me.

Within the last few seconds of your death, before you blackout, whatever you think of will most likely be the 'forever dream'.
You most likely will dream slightly when you are dead because some dead patients still have brainwave activity.
