Author Topic: Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to go Free to Play  (Read 486 times)

If you don't know what The Old Republic is, I made a topic during beta explaining almost everything about it. This is the topic.

I loved this game so much in beta even though I normally hate the combat system it uses, but the price was way too much for me. First you had to pay them $60, then you had to keep paying $15 per month for a subscription. Now they announced that their subscriber count has fallen below one million which is pretty much "We're forgeted if we don't do something quick" in the game industry. Especially because they spent over $130million into development of that game. As many people predicted even before it went public, it will finally go free to play sometime this fall. They are going to keep a subscription plan if you want more out of the game that will be the same price as the current subscription plans. Needless to say I'm excited about this going free to play, mostly because it doesn't seem like they're taking too much away from the people that won't pay for the game. However, they haven't released too many specifics on what exactly is going to be restricted from the Free to Play users, just general things.

Some trial thing, I really don't know when this was enacted, I haven't paid any attention to this game since it's launch. It was started July 31st, 2012. Same date of the Free to Play announcement.

I knew it was going to happen some day.

The game sucked anyways. It doesn't surprise me one bit that they're already going F2P. The only thing different from any other generic MMORPG was the fact that it was star wars, and it didn't even play it out that well. I never made it past a month and like level 29 on my main guy.

this is what happens to all mmos that fail lol

perhaps if they have player homes, clan owned cities, more then 6 classes and 6 skills...
things SWgalaxies was the greatest mmo for

and if THEY HAD GOD DAMN SPACE!!!!!!! wtf kind of star wars game dosnt have space!

and no that handicapped ass rail shooting arcade mode they had is NOT an mmo space gameplay...

First you had to pay them $60, then you had to keep paying $15 per month for a subscription

that is not a legitimate complaint. this is a mainstream MMO. its what is expected. and you cant use the coming f2p as an example because the game will forever be altered to suck x10 more because of it. as all mmos that make this move do.

I agree, compared to Star Wars Galaxies, this game is mediocre, but I don't know why I love it.
The space in this game is also complete stuff, they should have AT LEAST put something like Star Trek online has (hue star wars vs star trek) regarding space combat and travel.
Still, I like this game.
Also, I've never payed for MMO's so that pricing seems a little greedy to me. When I was younger though I did pay the subscription to Pirates of the Caribbean Online, but all I had to do was pay $15 a month, no pre-subscription payment.

Side note: The current trial thing in progress allows you to reach level 15 with no time limit. It's a pre-F2P trial thing Idunno. In F2P you will be able to reach the maximum level of 50 though.

the beta was a great single player experience
