Show me your S4!
show me your tears! this thread's still a huge wip, so excuse the total lack of content mmk?

from TV Tropes and Wikipedia:
"S4 League is a third-person shooter multiplayer game developed by Pentavision and published by Neowiz Games in 2007. It's been hosted in Europe and North America since 2008 by Alaplaya.
Similar in genre to GunZ: The Duel, but approaching from a very different angle, the game places a heavy emphasis on team-based gameplay, with all the game modes' winners being decided by the teams' overall scores and presenting itself in a sporting, rather than violent light wherever possible. There are currently six main game modes, Arcade, Battle Royal, Captain, Deathmatch, Touchdown, and Chaser.
The S4 in the name stands for "Stylish eSper Shooting Sports"; Stylish from the surprisingly deep and vibrant character customisation the game offers for its genre (after character creation); eSper from the abilities players can choose from, such as energy shields, flight, or invisibility to name a few; Shooting due to the game's emphasis on gunplay; and Sports, because the game claims to be an 'Online Sport', even going so far as to divide matches into two rounds, complete with a half-time dance from the mascots and a halfway decent automated commentator. Herein lies another oddity of S4 League: it presents itself as 'real', and in a way, it is. Thematically it's a virtual reality gun-play competition participated in over the internet by players using a PC-based client - as played with a bit by the game's trailer, and further emphasised by the computerised aspects of the graphics, which are at times reminiscent of TRON and .hack.
S4 League shares a number of visual and musical elements with the DJMAX series, also by Pentavision. A Playstation Portable version of the game has been created, which, while different in some ways, still routes through the same servers as the PC version of the game for online play, meaning PSP players can compete alongside PC based players. There appear, however, to currently be no plans to release S4 Portable outside Korea, which blows, because that'd be one more reason to buy a Vita or PSP."

from myself and several others:
"S4 League is the most badass game you will ever play and if you disagree I will eat your soul."

Images and Art
S4 League's arts actually done mostly by the artist Panamaman, who has done some pretty great work for the game.

Honestly? He pretty much IS the art team.
There's also tons of great fan art, for what that may count for.

And of course, some nice gameplay pictures.

Also, boobs!
If that doesn't get you, what will?

Videos
In addition to all the images, there's of course plenty of nice videos too.
Original trailer from forever ago
Way more up to date trailer. Seems to characterize the Fumbi as hating his job.
A trailer for Chaser Mode from a player from the Beta servers
Season 1: Dark Lightening Trailer. Take note that nothing in this trailer matters at all.
Season 3: Blade Trailer. Still completely irrelevant, still cool.
Wait! How about some actual friggn' gameplay videos?
Touchdown Gameplay
Someone managed to organize some Swords v Guns matches. Wish I was there.
Playing around with the katana.
Sigma Blade user against his buddy Katana user.
I'll add more as I find them, it's tough to find ones that aren't a. of hackers b. of people that suck c. really low quality d. really outdated (READ: ANY VIDEO WITH THE OLD LOBBY :panda:)

Gameplay Guide
And here's the really really WIP bulk of the post! Seriously, the following is just me testing the basic formatting I'll be using and stuff. It'll be worked on slowly but surely~

Weapons

Shooting Weapons

Submachine Guns

Damage Range: 11-42
Effective Range: Short ~ Medium
RoF: 8 rounds per second
Ammo: 30 / ∞
Reload Speed: ~2 Seconds
Movement Speed: 83%
Movement Speed while Firing: 83%
Unique Versions: Shark Machine Gun, DHa-41

Use:
Left Click: Fire SMG. The SMG is a very easy weapon to use, with a very high fire rate and decent accuracy topped with it. There is a slight (but noticeable) spread of fire when shooting, though, so the SMG is ineffective in longer ranges. SMG is an extremely versatile and basic weapon in S4 League. It is recommended to at least have this weapon in one of your 3 slots due to its simple use.

Pros:
High rate of fire
Quick reload speed
Shooting while running does not reduce speed.
Spreads for easy aiming
Cons:
Wide spread makes it poor for long-distance aiming
Random shot placement makes it poor for long-distance aiming
Low bullet clip

Spread pattern of the SMG:

Semi-Rifle

Damage Range: 8-32
Effective Range: Medium ~ Long
RoF: 8 rounds per second
Ammo: 30 / ∞
Reload Speed: ~2 Seconds
Movement Speed: 83%
Movement Speed while Firing: 75%
Unique Versions: AYA! Rifle

Use:
Left Click: Fire Semi-Rifle. It has a high firing rate that allows you to quick kill other players. Its spread pattern is similar to the SMG, but more narrow.
Right Click: Zoom. This function enlarges the crosshires at the center of the screen and zooms your vision, allowing you to easily see players clear from the other side of the field.

Pros:
High rate of fire
Zoom feature
Quick reload speed
Cons:
Low spread makes it difficult to hit close evasive targets.
Low bullet clip
Low damage

I tried playing this again and realized how stupid it is that AP users get a major advantage in every single aspect against you.
They're faster. They're tankier. They're stronger.
I wouldn't mind if when someone uses AP, they get to maybe specialize in what they want to be better at. Like picking one of the stats off the force pack instead of getting all of it. Of course they should be higher if it's like that but at least we don't have every cash user running around with more speed, power, hp, and sp. Then there's the clothing. They just have higher numbers than normal clothing. Why not give them normal stats, but with a bonus stat? Like being able to buy AP pants that have +3% move speed and the normal 3% defense (unless it's higher for PEN i forget) instead of it just having higher defense.
Or maybe only have force pack weapons and no AP costumes, just let them buy permanent PEN costumes.

Sure I can still beat them, but it's hard shooting down a pile of AP users no matter how good I am. I have to reload after each one because of their insane defense and end up running out of SP trying to survive from their 2-hitting smash rifles.

The GM Shammy was playing with just a bit ago actually mentioned that. :o GM's used to be able to equip the Hacker's outfit (If you remember the old tutorial (pre-Iron Eyes I think), the outfit of the canonical Hacker that showed up during that is what I mean. With it, they could use slash-commands to adjust ALL of their stats, but as a general rule of thumb they all tried to play totally legit, even without AP items. Apparently even the game's administration dislikes AP. :Y
Still though, I've noticed that a LOT of the AP users tend to be INSANELY bad at the game when you get down to it, so if you just dodge their stuffty pl- TASER sword dash, you can forget 'em up real easy during their delay. Only a handful of AP users are realy threats, I think.

It's hard when nearly all of them just spray with smash rifles and right-click spam their PSes from behind you. They carry their rev with them for when they get called sprayers.

Smash rifle, rev, and plasma sword have got to be the 3 most easiest to use and overpowered weapons in the game no matter how many times they deny it and call it skill.

Smash rifle is terribly easy to hit with and has high damage output. I have had no troubles hitting people from close and long range with it, headshots even. I went as far as calling it an "infinite ammo homing rifle but stronger".

Plasma sword is the easiest melee weapon to use by far, and one of the most annoying to fight against. It has the shortest delays on anything expcet that breaker jump attacks faster. It's also capable of instantly killing people without having the "i just swung a truck so i can't move for a moment" feeling that the spy dagger has. Did I mention that being able to have an instant high speed dash with high damage without needing SP is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen?

If anyone says revolver is hard to use and not as powerful then that deserves a laugh right there. You literally just holdfire on their head and they'll die. The only reason I consider smash rifle more overpowered than revolver is because it has a faster firing rate and a faster reload.

Every other weapon is too situational to be considered overpowered unlike the rest of the weapons. I can point out the flaws of the rest of them with ease.

I wouldn't mind having a PEN-only Blockland tournament though. (with certain weapon restrictions)

So is this pay-to-win
It's still possible to win without paying if you're skilled enough.

i'm waiting for there to be an "AP" weapon restriction when making a lobby
it probably won't happen because alaplaya is richards ;-;

still though, it's not too tough to get by i think, especially on the lower leveled servers
it's usually Free and Elite where you'll find the APers :Y

Yeah well the rookie channels are boring as all forget. Space A/D+Spacing over those daggers all day.

But seriously, we should hold a tournament or something.
Beginner level characters only (aka new account, level 0, 0 exp)
PEN shop only (no coupons, no fumbi/random, no enchantments, no chips, no AP, no capsules, no event)
^Edit: You can use enchantments but the character must only be used for the tournament. You may not play in outside matches in order to enchant your weapons, earn PEN, or EXP.

Weapon limits:
All: No spark rifle, homing rifle, smash rifle, or bombs
DM/BR: No daggers

Skill limits:
All: No flying, no metallic
=Maps with falling hazards: No anchor
DM: No cloak
TD:
=Side-3/station-2/old school/station-1/temple-m: No anchor, no SP mastery.
=Others: No Block
Captain: No bind, no cloak, no HP mastery
Siege: No detect
Chaser: (how do we even do a tournament of this?) No shield, no bind
BR: (^^^) No cloak, no detect, no hp mastery, no shield

Of course, suggestions are always welcome and changes may be made. If we even get enough attention for this.
We also have to decide on a mode/map to play. Perhaps even a different mode/map for each round in the tournament. Team sizes as well.

↑Heck yeah, I'm making that a thing ASAP (tomorrow). Maybe I can offer a steam game or something equally predictable and accessible as a reward.
I'll use that third reserved post for it. :o

Any questions or concerns about the rules?
I nearly cried because I felt like I had to put no detect somewhere in there. :c
I love it too much.

i never really used detect, though it seems like it'd be pretty handy.
and nope, that actually seems pretty much spot on. maybe i'll try to organize people into teams of 3 or 4.

We also have to decide on what mode and map we'll be playing on for each round as well.

For round 1 we can do some good ol' Neden-1 DM.
As for other rounds, it all depends on how many people we get in this.

Also going to make an amendment or two.

Hey look this topic died.
