Author Topic: Gonna build a computer for my birthday, any suggestions?  (Read 2457 times)

you're loving handicapped if you think that because windows 7 is newer that it's better

push comes to shove, you want that extra 512MB or 1GB of RAM that windows 7 uses with no background programs running when you're running higher-end programs or games
Just stop it.
If your computer is that stuff you need to worry about 512MB of ram being saved then there's problem 1.
If you're willing to downgrade to an older OS with (in comparison to W7) stuff memory management, stuff file management, stuff aesthetic appeal, terrible (if any) support for directx 11 and I believe openGL 5.0, and is just stuff and overobsessed overall, then there is your second problem.
Atop that if you're willing to take advice from a 15 year old script kiddie, there is problem 3.

get the forget.

performance > looks

deal w/ it

better OS
i mean why are you arguing about windows

deal w/ it
better OS
you can't just "deal with it"
if you're building a gaming computer, you can't pick an OS that supports less games

you are entitled to your opinion and your opinion is that you like a bad OS, whatever

It's painful to converse with you.
If anyone in this thread is serious at all, I wouldn't suggest taking advice from mr.html writer

GPU: get a amd radeon 6850 for a bit more.

psu: i think that's a little overkill but if you're going to upgrade the forget out of this build then ok.

motherboard and CPU:

costs a bit more money but this is far better then the other CPU.

HDD: if you're going to get plenty more games then i'd recommend a 1TB, otherwise yours is good.

CD/DVD reader: doesn't the PSU give you one as a gift?

hey look im actually helpful.
pagelossduetospam.

take this to PMs or something.

night, you have a great point right there.

1 - Win7 is a great OS, you're probably thinking of Win8. also what kind of gaming computer doesn't have a OS that can be used by gamers?

2 - Scriptkiddy = hacker who doesn't actually do any manual hacks, just run a program made by real hackers

GPU: get a amd radeon 6850 for a bit more.

it does? okay, could I get the CPU but not the motherboard? or is the current motherboard incompatible with that CPU?

also, the gift with the PSU is why I chose it to power this stuff, plus the more overkill the PSU is the longer it lasts since it won't be working it's ass off to power the components.

I don't think you'd want 20 FPS on TF2
My current TF2 FPS is 1 - 4 at an average, 20's a large improvement in my eyes.

half bump half response

At least Windows 7 can run ALL games if you have the right hardware.
Windows XP is slowly loosing compatibility, and soon will be obsolete.

freeze, it's already obsolete

jesus christ 1-4.
what are you powering on an ati rage?

this will give you a 120.

also, the motherboard is an A55, the phenom II wants an am3 socket, so it's incompatible.
not really much of a bonus life for the PSU, about a month at max.

what about the GPU?

even more so then ^^

okay, uh, could you find me a weaker PSU? by weakening the PSU more money is saved thus giving me more money to buy a better MB and CPU.

No. The PSU is literally the one item you do NOT want to skimp out on, quality or power.
Period.
You want more power than you need, and you want a respected brand name.

you only want like 50 more watts then the minimum power.
more if you like upgrading.
quality makes sense because boomboom.

what GPU are you going to use? the 550 ti or the 6850?

when i compared it's going to prefer a 500 watt in both ways.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371004 is a fairly good PSU i could find.

also, if you want i could try to make a whole new build and if i find it better then the build here i'll post it.

If you just tell me your budget I could put together the best build I can muster :) And make it look good.

As a previous owner of a 6850 I can guarantee you need 550W minimum. And that's bare minimum.
500W could cause some really unwanted forgetery when the card is under load.

I'm not sure about the 550 TI
