And a fax machine requires a telephone line and another fax machine, and it's done through stupid phone numbers.

You know, I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure that fax machines don't use telnet to transfer their data.

regardless of system of transfer, the principle is the same. everyone types in some number (this one being an IP address) and a message, and it sends it to a printer to print out. it's like saying using skype calling is like calling on phones, even if it uses different devices or system of transferring data.
