Author Topic: Marijuana Legalization  (Read 8303 times)

So, today in Biology the topic of Marijuana being legalized in the USA came up.  I was prepared for the typical, Potheads versus Everyone, but it was actually an intelligent debate.  I threw in a few of my beliefs on the subject, but I was more interested in what my peers actually had to say about it, I don't know if they all just suddenly matured before my very eyes, but I wish they were like this more often.

Anyways, my question is what do you guys think?

I think both sides have good points, and I don't really stand on either side, I'm more of a "If it happens, it does" kind of person on this topic.

I will list the pro's and con's here on the OP

Pros:
  • Taxation on Marijuana would produce national revenue
  • [0]Saving taxpayers money because of less people being convicted
  • Can be used for industrial purposes

Cons
  • People in society under the influence
  • [0]Second-hand smoke being passed to bystanders

Legalize it, and tax the forget out of it.

If Marijuana was legalized and taxed like Tobacco, the government would make bank and we could stop wasting time controlling something that is virtually harmless.

Thank you, quoted in OP for reference

EDIT;
Added taxation to pros of legalization

Marijuana is also a really good treatment for things such as depression as well as helping with a load of other illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis (I'd know because my mum has it). The Marijuana helps to relax the body.

I dont think it should be legalized for alot of reasons

Legalize Marijuana

in hospitals.

Can you name at least one?

If at very least they keep it illegal they should decriminalize it and make tabacco/achohol illegal or they're just hypocrites. It is not a gateway drug and is not bad for your health.

legalize weed for over the counter use is fine.

I'm not sure exactly how bad it would be, but my only problem is that the secondhand smoke from Marijuana can get other people high. At least with cigarettes I can be comfortable that someone smoking around me won't cause me to behave stupidly. But once again, I am not sure how much this would actually happen, if at all.
