It's tradition.

Ex. Year one someone decides Freshman are stupid.

Year two those Freshman, who are now Sophomores, decide the new Freshman are stupid because they were told so.

Year three the cycle continues.

When I went to highschool no one really cared if you were a freshmen or not. By the time I was Senior the freshmen girls started to dress slutty and the freshmen boys went around they were skinny twig badasses who could take on armies of giants.
