the BL forums are vastly superior to other forums (in design) because of incredible minimalism.
if you look at the forums of any other game you'll notice things like rep systems, titles, banners, and signatures attached to normal posts. Badspot and his cohorts made a very good decision in omitting all of those things.

Favorite things about this one:
-Signatures do not show for anyone
-Small avatar size limit
-Not loaded with hundreds of useless features
-Boards get marked as read by clicking on them
-Can click on the [New] button next to a topic to go to the first post you haven't read yet

Because something simple looking used for communication is good.
Something 'super cool overloaded with flash menus' is good for featuring a product, events, and stuff like that.
