That doesn't really outweigh the absurd amounts of hostility and fighting that the section breeds.
Just let handicaps be handicaps.

It's an unprofessional solution to a problem that really isn't one. Again, the fact that we have an entire forum board dedicated to how much of a stuffhole this place is probably isn't a good sign for Valve judges on greenlight.

would you rather that be spread throughout the forum like a fine paste of poop or conveniently condensed into one dark corner

I wouldn't mind the smattering of stuff if we had janitors who cleaned it up. Then again we need more janitors in the first place because a big stinky turd in the corner is still enough for the health inspectors to flag this place.

it's already kinda both tbh

the one additional janitor we have already is arse, and there's definitely no one else here capable of it, so it's that or nothing

I'm sure there are members who would make adequate moderators.
There's never been any recruiting of them though, so no one's ever been able to put themselves up for suggestion.
The only people who have become moderators are friends of Badspot.

I don't think the Drama section should be removed, but I would be in favour of other moderators being hired.
As well as some more specific rules on the Drama board, preventing the unnecessary topics, like people complaining about other people having poor grammar, or using phrases like "/support".

And with a few more moderators, perhaps with some set to moderate invididual boards or forums, then rules like "No Flaming" could be better moderated, since the line between saying something bannable and just being rude is quite blurry.

The problem is however, a number of users on these forums openly admit that they like these forums because of their reasonably lax moderation.
While I understand that you shouldn't please a few people in favour of the whole community, but it would still cause some upset.

But even then, everyone knows that moderators (whoever that may be) have the ultimate power to decide things.
You do as they say, end of.

The problem is, moderators should only be friends of Badspot because he will actually trust them.
Who doesn't want to be friends with Badspot?

I'm not saying that moderators shouldn't be friends with Badspot or that they shouldn't get on.
That doesn't make sense.

But so far it seems all moderators become moderators on account of being friends with Badspot, rather than say an ability to be a moderator.
They all do a good job, but maybe if other moderators who seemed like they had the character for it were able to put themselves forward and possibly be chosen, then it would mean we could have a good team of moderators more dedicated to the task of moderating the forums.

I love how sir dooble clarifies stuff most of the time

it's also basically a given that most people in positions of doling out power would like to keep tabs on those they have given it to, and it's significantly easier to trust someone when you can meet them and hit them in the face for wrongdoing.

That doesn't mean it's the only way to trust someone.
And considering Badspot and Ephi live in different countries and continents, it's fair to say that Badspot couldn't just meet up and give him a slap on the wrist if he did something wrong.

Badspot could still keep in contact with moderators via things like Skype or Steam or Forum Messages or the hidden boards on the forums.
And punishment is still easy to use. Revoking moderator status or banning from the forums for example.
It would still keep moderators in line.

There's no real reason to not use regular forum-goers as moderators, if you believe they are up to the responsibility and are capable.

There's more crossover between those two circles than you realise I think.  The forums are the way they are because Badspot's always had a fairly laid back attitude to moderating the community. The no flaming rule as everyone knows is only enforced in really exceptional and excessive circumstances. Moderator behavior is dictated by how the admin wants things to be run. You need to take it up with Badspot directly not blame the moderators for doing the job they've been tasked with.

I have to take issue with the fact that you don't think I have the ability to be a moderator - I'm without a doubt the most active moderator right now and I do all the moderator things like checking all the reports you guys send every day, banning people for rule infractions and such, cleaning up after forum Self Deletes. I've even got forum pms going to my phone so I can sort out forum Self Deletes in the middle of the night. I don't think you can argue with that level of dedication.

If you're after someone who's going to be all nice to users then you're thinking of a community manager - that's not what I am.
