Author Topic: Bones is returning laptop. Upgrading Desktop. Opinions welcome.  (Read 928 times)

The Alienware (m17x R3) had a defective GPU (580m). I don't know what my address will be at my next base, and I'll be there in two weeks, so I sent it in for a full refund. I'll likely get my old desktop shipped to me and upgrade some parts... maybe buy a 3D TV to play through.

Current specs:

i5 2500k (Coolermaster Hyper 212 heatsink)
8GB DDR3 1,333MHz RAM
1TB 5,400RPM HDD
240GB SSD
MSI 560 TI Twin Frozr II 1GB OC
Antec 750W PSU

I'm thinking about buy an NVidia GTX 670. Opinions?

The 670 is a solid choice, no doubt. However, if you were using a lot of that 750W PSU you might want to think about ugrading that as well. As far as bottlenecking goes, your processor will not be on the same par as the 670 but I don't think they'll be that far off

The 670 apparently uses less power than my 560 TI. :P

lol

The 750 W is perfectly fine and the i5 is a great processor and you don't need to waste money to upgrade unless you really want to

I'll probably only upgrade the GPU.

1. Get the Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core
2. Get the 670 I am getting it and it looks awesome

Pity about the laptop. Being owned by Dell, I knew the customer support was stuff and I had heard rumors they were prone to failure. But to hear an account from someone like you... guess it verifies it to some degree.

I've never had a problem with dell before this. But I will say... while the products forgeted up, customer support was great.

Man you had bad luck with laptops.
Desktops are better anyways =P

lol

Yea, I don't know a whole lot about power supplies, I have to use the PSU calculator each time.

Anyways, as ben said, a solid processor such as the i5-3570k would work amazingly with a 670 (I have it, and it works wonders). However there's really no need to spend another ~$220 dollars when you can use the great one you have now. Overclocking could also be an option depending on how old it is.

As for which 670 to pick, this article does a great comparison of several different variations

I have a 670 and it's completely amazing. You won't regret buying it.

Yeah, a new processor will not benefit me with gaming. I'm pretty sold on the 670 though.

Seems bizarre hah, but I'm glad its sorted.

It was a refurb. It's probably the GPU-mobo connection and not the GPU. They've replaced the card before.
