Author Topic: What kind of servers get the most players?  (Read 3245 times)

The problem is that new ideas don't last as long as completely lame and overdone ideas.

For example, I've made 'reactor TDM' and Trigun made Dueling. Both became very busy when they were first hosted. However, if we were to host them now, very few players would join.

But yet OMAs and knife TDMs still get loaded with players whenever they're hosted.

OMAs?

OMAs?
One man army, one example being Pecon's boss battles server.

oh
ok

i never really liked pecon's boss battles, mainly cause i was terrible at it

I don't like it because it's just lengthly drawn out projectile spamming.

It seems to me that it's always been the servers that have unoriginal gamemodes, low quality/reused builds and poor moderation that are always dominating the server list. I get it that some people like playing the same old gamemodes for years on end but I wish there was always something else to do other than Jail  RPs, Knife TDMs, Falling platforms, City RPs, "realistic" TDMs, ZAPTs, Trench TDMs and Infinite mining. These type of servers are always the same old thing and I don't see what's so great about them anymore.

And for goodness sake, people. Stop using the stupid votekick mod. Its a horrible way to moderate your server and chances are everyone who's hosted with this has gotten a drama on their server before. I can't believe I have to even say this but it's still a big problem.

There are a lot of original gamemode ideas out there that are just as interesting but I rarely ever see them at the top of the player list. Starship creeper survivals are a great example.

I should make a little chart listing different server gamemodes based on which are best.

so basically, people want something original
tons of unoriginal server are hosted, and people just go "meh i'll join this since it has a lot of players"
an original server is hosted
no one joins, due to everyone being on the unoriginal server
the host of the original server figures "oh this isn't a good thing to host", and hosts something unoriginal instead
people complain about the lack of original servers
repeat

solution: get your server known. i would like some links to original server topics that have failed.

ok, i'm doing something wrong then because I only get around 5 players on anything but Family RPs
You must have an attractive name.

Jail RPs
Holy stuff every time I host one they always get from 10-32 players.

the topics aren't what attract the tons of users though, since probably 3 quarters of BL players don't even go on the forums. people just spread the word themselves to others over RTB or on other servers. then once the server gets alot of people to kickstart it initially, its pretty much set. i'm pretty sure that 90% of the people who went on pecon's server didn't join because they saw the topic.

i think one problem is that i don't have(and can't get) RTB? but idk

I once hosted a server called "NOTHING TO SEE HERE" with 5 bricks on it and I got 8 players.

no crap. creating a topic is a good way to get a few initial players, which can then lead to it spreading like pecon's. if the host is the only player in the server, creating a topic can help get a few more, which can then attract more people to the server.

no one even looks to see what the build is so the build isn't the issue
Builds are the way to get repeat customers unless you are hosting something really original. When a person logs on and wants to play a zombie game, they are going to try and think of a server they know of. If they end up with a choice between Jimbob's or Sally's server, and Sally had a cooler build, they will choose Sally's. Repeat players are very important because once they become loyal, any server you host will get enough players for it to launch into popularity.
