You don't need zone bricks to spawn floating bricks.

These bricks in particular did use zone bricks, but a version of them I created quite awhile ago, I called them Float Cubes

its exactly like the zone cubes only without the events, and one extra size I think

but you didn't write the script to the generator.
you used terragen if I remember correctly.
Then you just make some little script to convert the heightmap and do colors.
