If you have to choose between Chinese, Japanese, and Latin, go for Japanese.

Once you understand the basic stroke orders, it's easy to guess it from characters. Memorizing the characters and what they mean is what's hard.

I'm an ABC. My understanding of Mandarin is pretty limited. It's not enough to get by.

By extension, my knowledge of Cantonese is "yap yi sam"

Mandarin is easier for beginners than Cantonese from what I've heard.

Yeah Cantonese has 8 tones.
