Author Topic: Torque is not a piece of crap  (Read 1958 times)

Why does everyone think that the only thing the Torque Game engine can do is have a player hop around? It's really good for such a cheap engine (not including Unity 3D). The graphics were fine (at the time). Plus, if something is not possible, Eric Hartman is free to change it around and MAKE it possible.

Things like mirrors have existed for the longest times, but they were removed due to them being inefficient at processing the mirrored image (it would render the whole scene twice)

Don't shadows do this too?

Yep.

Shadows on high renders everything 5 times :)

No, no, Torque really is pretty silly.

I think mostly you only know how silly it can be once you get into actually working with it.

It's decent, it's just really silly sometimes.

The netgraph is a really useful tool and very easy to debug with.

In fact, the ghost updates line hit the bits received line which means there are too many things in the map moving around.

Just a thing I like about the engine.

Well with all the modifications made to the engine, Blockland is Practically its own engine, But it is still Torque, just a highly modified version.

Like all engines, torque has good things going for it and bad things in it as well
In the case of torque, the bad things are just really really bad, by comparison

What would have a better option to use instead of Torque? I wonder why Badspot picked Torque of all engines.

wait.. what

Then that means

Mirror bricks could be done? I mean, can't we have mirror bricks, and then have them have a graphics option as well? Off would give you just a blank brick with some sorta glass looking texture, and then you can turn it on and have a mirror. I know mirrors were thrown out because they caused lag (or something like that, from what I've heard) but if that's true then they would only lag as much as shadows. And shadows were added, so why not mirrors?

If reflection was added at all, it'd probably only be for environment water.

If you had shaders on high where it's rendered five times, one mirror would probably cause you to render ten times. It's really not worth it if that's the case.

yes just about nobody would be able to run high shaders and mirrors well. But most people can't even run max shaders now either. Besides, if you have shaders on low- rendering everything twice, then adding on mirrors would only make everything render four times. If you can run high shaders, you can run mirrors with low shaders at least.

Maybe it's not worth it, but I still think it'd be really cool

Good lord, shut the forget up about this already. Using any other engine for blockland is just completely unneccesary

wassup trey? you just blew up at a guy for nothing...

No, I blew up at altiris, the guy who has made at least 3 topics about how blockland should change engines and dropped multiple references to it in other threads (such as this one), DESPITE the fact that we've told him time and time again that it's a bad idea.
