The US is also coming to a close too. They had their fun. But it was not meant to last

mostly because the idea of "freedom" and "rights" have become so distorted and abused to justify nearly anything. "it's my right" or "i have the right to do this and this and this and if you don't agree with me you're a hateful brainwashed person" is the kind of stupid stuff i always hear that reminds me why this country isn't going to last another 50-100 years. we've dropped exponentially into a sharp moral and social decline that we won't get out of; it's just a matter of time until this reactor reaches its critical point and blows. hopefully when the US does end, it will end peacefully.

To me the US's downfall is how politicians have lost touch with its citizens and only have their own agendas. Republicans and Democrates and some Third Party canidates may say they are on your side, but really they just say things to get into power and the expense of those who put them their. So it seems the iris is going into Canada and taxing people who use to live in the US, they want to tax every mile we drive and well more taxes which is used to fill their offshore accounts and military. The money we pay in taxes for the military could have been used to feed and house the poor and homeless. Another problem is that the bill of rights and constitution is always being ignored by our government, so now you see city's like San Fransisco ban the ownership of guns as well as out side the city. So if the government is there to stop us from doing bad things then who is watching the government?

So basically our government is a power hungry monster.

Whenever I think of the US I think of Mit Romney and how forgeted you are going to be if he becomes president.

Atleast our conservative prime minister realizes why there are windows on a commercial aircraft. I can't say the same for your possible-president. (source)

Yeah, if the US elects him, they will be voting for 4 more years of the world thinking all Americans are idiots.

Well you live in New Zealand. What has New Zealand ever done?

A huge lot, especially for its size.

Might want to brush up on history.

Harm made the good point that all big empires come to an end.

Britain might no longer be an Empire, but that's not to say it doesn't make a massive influence in the world, past and present.
Think of how many countries were developed due to the Empire. There were downsides to all this, true, such as slavery (in some countries for some time) and high taxes and unfair representation of the native people.
But this was no more than any other European Country with global territories did. The Dutch, The French, The Spanish, The Germans... They've all had numerous colonies in Africa, the Americas and Asia. And now they don't.
It just happens that for some time Britain was the most successful of the European Colonisers.

Just think how many countries and territories around the world which used to be part of the Empire still happen to have Royal representation in them, or still adorn Union Flags within their own national flags or emblems.
Or how many countries speak English as a first language.

I don't think it's fair to say the UK is "losing it's touch", because it doesn't own all the land it used to.
You'd hardly say that the Roman Empire, which conquered much of Europe, or the Persian Empire, which conquered much of Asia and North Africa, or the Mongolian Empire, which conquered much of Asia too had "lost their touch".

..but they did

..but they did

It's not quite the same to say they "lost their touch" when in reality the world changed against them.

If a basketball player is the best in his game, but a car accident breaks his leg and he can no longer play, he hasn't lost his touch, he's been crippled.
To me, "lost their touch" suggest that they forgot how to do what they were doing, rather than conditions changed to prevent them from continuing.

But either way, all Empires end, so it's not like you can even compare them to a "perfect Empire", so, how can you say they failed if no one ever succeeded?

judging by the same people in power, the happiness of the people, and the longetivity of a nation pretty much sums up a "perfect empire"

That is true but now they're just loving up.
Also lets not forget how USA kicked their ass and destroyed their Navy (which was the best Navy in the world at the time) with a bunch of small boats and only partially trained men.
Gotta love America!

You're saying the UK's loving up and then go on to praise America? Keep up that dithering patriotism haha.
