Force the the thing shut!

Force the the thing shut!

: What is it?

: It's a multidimensional rift in the fabric of space and time. Using a highly charged electrical field generated by the magnetic copper rotary combined with the, albeit primitive, power of a steam engine I was able to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of power needed to use the ancient runes that make it work.

: Perhaps I'm speaking out of my derrière here, Nik, but can't we just close it?

: I wish it were that simple. While you'd be correct to assume that it is, in fact, a doorway of sorts, the power required to create it on this end is just too much. We can't shut it down here else all of the transistors, a new invention of mine, inside will fail and overload the already taxed system. It'd create an energy blast the size of the state alone.

: Well, what's wrong with it now?

: If left as it currently is, the portal will continue to eat away at the space time around itself and, given enough time, begin to devour the known universe.

: On... this end... what about the other one?

: I was afraid you'd make that observation. Theoretically, yes, closing the gateway from the other side could be a safe way of shutting it off. But! Wait! I'm not sure exactly how to do that. I'd need to see the portal on the other side.

: Well, you can't go in there.

: And neither are either of you. Just... give me time...

Give Nik more time or decide who should go in, Nathan or Sam?

Is there any way to make a timed device in the parallel universe that will, after a certain time limit expires, it will close it by the other end, allowing our hero(es) to escape in time?

: Could we create some sort of alarm and turn it off remotely?

: Erm. It's possible, but I'm afraid we don't have nearly the time for that right now. If my calculations are correct, the rift will decay in an exponential rate until it's past its half life, in which it will begin it's consumption.

: That gives us, what? An hour, a day?

: Er, I'd say... roughly eleven minutes.

stuff.
Create a collapsing umbrella-like device and stick it through the portal.  Once it's through, retract it and collapse the portal entrance on the other side.

Or will that create a funnel effect?

The problem isn't so much the portal itself, but the device creating it.

The other side has a similar device with hopefully similar controls. If Nathan or Samuel should travel into it and close it that way, Nik would tie an anchoring rope onto them and as soon as they're clear, pull them back into our realm.

Now, that is of course risky. It'd require a skill roll, and if it fails, one character may be spending most of Act I in the spirit world (hence forth: the ethereal, our world is the corporeal).

Send Samuel in there he's got a ghost gun or some stuff.

: Nikola, you and I both know how this is going to end.

: Oh dragi, Samuel. I'm sorry, I've made a mess of all of this. My damned ideas and their damned results! All I ever do is jebeš sve gore. I should have never left Graz. My poor father...

: Samuel, you don't have to do this. Let someone with nothing worth to live go in.

: And miss this opportunity? To be the first human to step foot in the ethereal? Poppyrooster. Besides, I'm more capable of taking on whatever it is that I might see in there. And at the very least, I'm clearly more properly dressed than you. Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

: Alright, if you're going to do this then you need to make sure you're prepared.

What should Sam do before he jumps into the portal? Remember, you only have ten minutes. Choose wisely your actions.

nikola tesla and mark twain

sam should get more magic bullets

No don't send sam send Nathan

Wouldn't that draw the two universi together, causing an instantaneous universal collapse on both universi?

Its a Multidimensional Portal. Not universes.
