The idea that everything new is bad is loving handicapped. There are still lots of great musicians out there, and half the stuff regarded as classic is utter stuff

OP is a gigantic hipster friend and his opinion is irrelevant.

I feel like I'll get eaten alive if I say I don't like John Lennon or the Beatles that much

i like classic rock, new age rock, and rap

so it doesn't require any skill whatsoever to make music nowadays? go download ableton  suite and make an album in half an hour. since it doesnt require any talent or ability you will be more than capapble of doing it.

I will openly say I never liked anything the Beatles did, however that wasn't what I was referring to when I said a lot of classics are utter stuff. The Beatles actually were innovative and original with their music

That is Alex, correct?

I like classic rock more than most modern music, but some modern stuff is still pretty good.

Classic music is great, but modern music is equally great.
OP is also are making big assumptions. I'm sure there were some classical composers that just wanted fame and money and I'm sure plenty of modern bands don't use anything computerized.

local bands are mostly better than big-time bands.

I listen to Imogen Heap, Great Big Sea, Afro Celtic Sound System, Nickel Creek, Natalie MacMaster (saw her and her husband live, and it was amazing), and Sting, in terms of recent talented music. These, in my opinion, are some of the greatest artists/groups of this time and they stand up well to their predecessors.
I also realize that my tastes are by no means mainstream.
Is there a new Sting or something? Because he is far from recent.

Don't forget to mention Nickelback! They're great!

Although they started out like One Direction and wrote simple cheezy love songs, they did get a bit more innovative

also i think OP should realize there was a lot of popular stuffty music back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s too.  We just never hear about them because they suck.  All we hear about is the good stuff.

In 20 years, nobody will be listening to Justin Beiber or Katy Perry, but they will be listening to artists like Daft Punk and Adele.
