Author Topic: Help - Running Windows 95 games on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit  (Read 5215 times)

I am currently trying to run a very obscure game for Windows 95 on my Windows 7 64-bit OS. Of course, even the installer will not run for me. Compatibility Mode doesn't make a difference, either. A person who did a video on it says I must use a virtual machine. I've always hated the concept of simulating an entire OS within another OS - just came off as a sloppy/lazy way to go about doing things. But if adjustments truly can't be made to run this, I'm open for a starter guide on how to set up Windows 95 Virtual Machine to run it. This game is supposed to be the first microphone controlled game, so it claims, so I'd probably need help making sure the virtual machine picks up the microphone channel as well.

Sloppy, maybe.  Lazy, not at all considering it takes work.

First obtain your copy of Windows 95.  Then, get VirtualBox.  It's a very great and free virtual OS environment and I've used it to run old Windows 2000 era games flawlessly, including 3D games.  It should have no problem picking up your mic but I haven't experimented with that.

Considering it's Windows 95 you shouldn't need to give the OS a lot of resources.

Well I'm not sure we had Windows 95. I know we had Windows 98. Either way, the oldest computer we have is Windows XP so we don't have a copy. Wouldn't it not be legal to download it? Some places acted like "Oh, Windows 95 basically comes with it." but that's not true.

my dad threw away a windows 95 disk because he didn't need it anymore.
I WAS GONNA USE IT FOR VIRTUALBOX.

oh well.  I think i played that game on XP anyway. was a game from 96 i think

Try Windows XP mode.

I only have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, which the site says I can't access Windows XP Mode in full with. I actually read here before making the topic about that: http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/1393/how-to-get-old-16-bit-windows-games-to-work-on-64-bit-windows

Point being I'd need to upgrade to professional. Anytime Update says that's $90... to run a Windows 95 game... Uh...

Try Dosbox

What is hilarious is I just finished trying DOSBox. I never fully realized that was basically a DOS virtual machine. Thing is though, I have no clue how to do this. I've used DOSBox to run Toonstruck, but Toonstruck actually opens and lets me install. With this game, I can't run ANYTHING from it. How can I use DOSBox to install it? I tried using my Toonstruck [autoexec] to mount this game and then F:\setup.exe, but it won't let me do that. Don't think it would.

Give me the files for the game and I'll look them over.

Uh, well do I still have you on Steam? The files are a bit difficult to get at.

If you're still around, might in inquire how to do this? This seems to be the only solution.

Try Windows XP mode.

Windows XP mode is a crock of stuff.  It's basically a really washed down virtualbox of XP.  Couldn't run any of the games I wanted with it.

Oh. I can't use it so I didn't know. My cpu doesn't support it or something.

Older CPUs without Virtualization technology can't do so, yeah.  Most newer CPUs should be okay though.  I think Windows XP Mode had some little hop-scotch leap-through-rings-of-fire method of working around it but probably not anymore.

So, do you have a guide for running Windows 95 with VirtualBox which you, yourself approve?
