It kind of depends on the space you've got, the use of the stairs, where they go (corners?) and then the general design of the building they are in.
I personally quite like stairs where you can see the space below each step. But that doesn't fit in all circumstances.
Sometimes I find stairs tricky to get them to look right. It's something that very much depends on the structure you're building.
