That's when you grab a pair of scissors and unleash your wrath. You feel like such a hardass serial killer, walking around a prison at night with a pair of bloody scissors, and then stabbing someone to death with them. You exit the room, covered head to toe in blood, and seek out your next victim.

until you realize it takes an upwards of 10 minutes to kill someone, even if you use a pistol

Freeciv: http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
pretty much just a civ clone. except all open sourcey and cute.

Dwarf Fortress: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
you build a fort to house some dorfs that all have jobs to do around the fort to keep it running. every dorf needs to eat/sleep/drink/or whatever.

honestly though?

one of the best games i've ever played. has much amounts of replayability and depth. huge ass dynamic worlds that have randomly generated years of history to them, social constructs like "this person doesn't like this person" and exciting events such as goblin sieges. i'm not even scratching the surface with this description. but there's a huge learning curve. like giant. like hours of learning from dutch men on the internet giant.

Binding of Isaac: http://store.steampowered.com/app/113200/
NES zelda-y dungeon style game with tons of achievements/things to discover. has a really weird theme to it though.

edit: isn't free :<
