i spent 2 hours trying to get it to work, it never did.

i'm pretty sure it doesn't ban you if it's just open (not having any process opened in CE)?

It will.
I started a game once (it wasn't DayZ. but still some game) with Cheat Engine open. Banned.
I've never seen an instance where a game checks if the process is open in CE.
