Don't use the likes of CoolText because logos made with it are generally frowned upon by other forum members

All of my cool text logos have been accepted and liked by many forumites.  They always look good an are the easiest/fastest to make.  I recommend cooltext.com

Personally I would go with Paint.Net
Gimp is good too but for beginners paint.net is easier to learn
