Turn based grandish strategy

Supreme Commander and Command & Conquer are the best IMO. Preferably C&C Red Alert 2.

I like to make my base all defensed up and have little squads of tanks and men. But eventually if that doesnt work I just start massproducing and overrun the enemy.

I play Company of Heroes, and Supreme Commander 2. Sometimes Star Wars: Empire at War.

I'm not a fan of RTS or turn based games but I love it when games have a serious side of strategy in them. A good example of this is the old Brothers In Arms games for the xbox and ps2. If you didn't plan stuff out your squad got wiped out and you were toast. Another good one is SW: Republic Commando on the hardest difficulty(any less and your squad godmode'd everything).

You might like Arma 2 then.

Have ARMA, ARMA2(OA and all expansion packs). Last time I played it, it had been killed by that Day Z crap. I'm just waiting on the third.

Play allies and surround your base with deployed GI's, prism towers, and patriot missiles, nothing soviet will get in. If super weapons are turned off he is forgeted.

Arma 2 is quite fun, with the aspect of realisation and vehicles. DayZ got it pumped up and filled with people, that the domination servers I go to taboo talk about DayZ.

iirc you could just spam tanks and win
real life is broken america can just spam tanks and win

Age of Empires III, try that for size

What annoys me is when it’s nearing the end of the game, I have this huge army I’ve spent so long constructing, and the enemy is puny and worthless. I could just attack them and have everything be done, and win, but there’s like no joy to that. I like to make my battles as extensive as possible to see every aspect of the battle.

What are your thoughts about playing a RTS game? And which kind? I know we have a variety, Age of Empires, Starcraft, and in this case, Halo Wars.
And how do you do it? I know there's rushes people like to do, which I personally hate, because it's nothing but running over the game with a handful of medium level or low level units to end the game quickly.
you're playing against an easy computer, which will practically never attack you and never build up a force greater than a small mass of infantry and a light vehicle.  because it's on easy difficulty.  if it was on a harder difficulty, it would attack you earlier and harder.

as for playing RTS games, it's practically a skill on it's own.  there's a combination of being able to quickly create a force while also effectively growing it and improving it.  it'll depend from game to game specifically on details but the core mechanic is similar to this, unless it's an incredibly broken RTS where fighting in most games never extends past rushing the basic units.
