Author Topic: First job  (Read 1517 times)

Welp, I've come of age where I can get a job, and my mom is sure as hell ready to get me out the house, working. I'm not really sure what I'm doing, so I feel like I'm meddling with a bomb, using a pair of fingernail clippers.

places applied so far
(2x) - Target (Sales Clerk / some-title-relevant-to-stocking-shelves)
Gander Mountain (similar to richard's sporting goods)
Stone Creek (Movie Theater)
A nearby Country Club (waiter)
uhhh

I'm scared holy stuff forums help me what is all this nonsense. Make me feel better by posting about the first job you got and how horrible fun it was.

You should work at Gander Mountain. That'd be cool.

Well, I worked at Kroger's for my first job I think a year ago, got paid minimum wage and worked very little hours.
That was hell, my co-workers were all starfishs and pushing carts isn't the most fun thing to do while in the middle of winter.

Now I work at a local computer shop were we fix computers, build custom computers, design websites, and program to client's needs.
I get paid ~$11/hour after taxes, and a 15% comission rate for every PC I build off of my work hours.
I work with three other people most of the day that school isn't taking up, so it's a pretty good job.

Good luck though.

See I think I have good odds there because I'm a Boyscout and I'm pretty out-doorsy when I can go someplace (I don't like jogging or anything, stuff like whiter-water rafting, rifle, hunting, rock climbing, etc) AND the general manager at the brand new gander mountain that's only 3 minutes away from my house is the nephew of one of the troop leaders, who just so happens to approve of me (he's known me since I joined the troop)
orcountryclub
tips would be good
I'm worried Ill trip and send food flying
I'd probably go home crying. :panda:

and a 15% comission rate for every PC I build off of my work hours.
You told me about that.

You also mentioned lacking the proper funding for something, something caught fire and the entire system was lost, and you had to pay for it.
Story not entirely accurate.

you could have got a job well before 17, surely

anyway i dont know how it works where you are, but you should try and get a traineeship somewhere

Adin, can I have a pic of you to see if you would look good as a waiter? :D

don't be a waiter. mostly bc that's a women/gay guy thing. if you tell your friends you got a job as a waiter they will surely think you're gay. unless you are gay and they already know that. in which case go ahead

so I'd suggest Target or Gander Mountain, bc all you'll be doing in either of those places will be related to stocking or checking customers out
maybe the movie theater

my first job was at a TJ-Maxx store inside a local strip mall
it was fine till they put me on the cash register with no actual training, telling me i must sell some stupid cards of theirs and follow an exact procedure each time

it freaked me out, eventually i quit from stress overload (<4 weeks in)
later i was told that particular store never really trained their employees very well anyway

i didn't mind doing stock, cleaning all the merchandise that fell on the floor, restocking, such and such. but the cash register was a bit much, even though prior to that i had done it before at a couple volunteer events (coffee shops and such). i don't remember why it was such a big deal anymore.

good point- wait. what? By check out you mean help them at the cash register, right? Because I shouldn't be evaluating which female in the lobby has the nicest ass.

Flight attendant, look into that. it's not right for everyone but it gets you to a large city if you want to.

You have a six month training period and for a year or so you have a what they call probation, where you're working only in your country and don't get to pick where you go, and you're on call, but then when you're done with that, it's over. You get free flights anywhere with most of them.

flight attendant is also a woman/gay thing. not to mention that I'm sure being a flight attendant makes it hard to go to school
