Author Topic: Hey, who here can help me with linux?  (Read 1148 times)

How can I install a mod for HL2 that's a window's binary when my steam is the linux version?
How to move a folder to the c:\ directory? (I seem to need permission to do that)
How can I make sure my graphics drivers are up to date as much as possible?
Why does Blockland only run at like 20 fps max with wine, is there a way to improve this?

Backstory (lol):

Was playing on Tango's server, building some stuff in peace, then everything froze up.
I thought it was lag, tried to leave and rejoin the server, but that didn't work, so I though blockland froze up, tried to open Task Manager, and that didn't work.
So for the first time since I got this PC about two+ years ago I had to do a full restart to unfreeze it.
Except it got past the first booting screen and showed "boot from cd/dvd" (a message that usually appears when I leave a cd/stroage device in the pc)
Then when I remove all possible other storage devices and retried, it said;

could not recognize file system
grub:

Where I could type commands after the 'grub' except nothing worked, not even 'help'
Downloading ubuntu now, gonna try for the best with a full system reinstall.

loving hell.

Lucky a few days ago I backed up all my projects to my external hard drive, which I just confirmed suffered no damage, so my website and programs and projects blockland and otherwise are all still there, even if a few of them are versions that are a week old.

So lucky I tried to install debian last weekend or I'd have practically nothing.

Dang, that's gotta suck. At the very least, your hard drive is safe, though.

External, yes.

Well, tried to do a 'alongside windows installation' it ran seccessfully, rebooted the computer, and what do you know... same error!
Gonna just go ahead and reformat the entire drive now.

Grub is a Linux bootloader, do you already have a Linux distro installed?

Why on earth do you use Vista?

Already had a ubuntu next to windows install, actually.
Just thought that if I redid it it might fix my bootloader for me.
It did not.
Now doing a full instal with only ubuntu. Hope THAT fixes it.

previous OS, it came with the comouter and I never had 7 at the time.

Oddly enough, I now have almost double the hard drive space I had before on my internal. 350gb to about 550gb
I guess I gave a chunck to linux when I installed it as an alongside OS a long time ago.

Linux doesn't take as much hard drive space as windows to run?

omg

omg
no, he's saying the partition he created for linux when he installed it included like 200gb of extra space.
though linux probably does take up a LITTLE less space.

Oh my god there's a steam for linux.
Sweet.

grub? must need food
or insects

Anyway, now that I have linux steam, how do I install RnL (a half life 2 mod) which afaik is windows only.
You see, wine won't work, cause the rest of steam (and therefore half life) is not windows.
