I would say the only downside to gaming laptops is that you can't (easily) build them yourself and they cost a bit more than a prebuilt computer with the same power.

In my experience with laptops you shouldn't use them the way you would use a hardcore gaming desktop or they will die fast.

No, not really. It's like an RC car and a real car. Sure, you can put a real engine in the RC car and it'll go fast, but it will never have the same performance as the real car. Powerful parts are big. You can't get an nvidia 690GTX in a laptop, let alone two.
