Author Topic: Your Server Sucks (and here's why)  (Read 7515 times)

There have been a lot of threads lately about how stuffty servers are. Why dont you guys just stop complaining and ACTUALLY make your servers ( and others )  better.

well me and bushido just had a long discussion about some great ideas and let me just say you're going to see a good server soon

Trust me, i would, but my computer can generally only run a server for about five minutes before everything freezes up and i need to force quit via task manager.

Well I enjoyed reading that.

I hope you make more of these Bushido.  The way servers are run currently is just ridiculous.  I think the stuff really hit the fan around the time Badspot introduced that No-More-Port-Forwarding update.  For me atleast, such a large influx of new servers made the average population of my server go down considerably.  With less of a crowd I felt less and less inclined to stay at my server, and thus maintained it less.  My server now sits in a dusty old box on my E:/ drive.  Filled with glitchy old add-ons and ancient ban-lists.  Occasionally I'll take it out for a spin, but it's just not the same anymore.

My point is, the average quality of server has gone down considerably.  40% dont care about their clients, another 50% don't even know what they're doing, and the final 10% are actually just fine.

I wish there was a Blockland Training school.  The learning curve is huge, and the resources for several sections of gameplay are either nonexistent, or hard to find, or unclear.

I am personally busy with other projects.  Also, so many reasons.
- The average loading time between different servers has increased. (more disconnects)
- The amount of attention required to get a person to sit through the load time is also getting larger.
- My inclination to hang out with 12-year-olds grows smaller every day.
- The engine changes have reduced the amount of diversity between servers.
- The engine changes have increased the amount of idiots hosting(they couldn't figure out port forwarding, and now they don't need to.)
- Blockland Launcher Increases load time, making it harder to test if a server will work properly.
- Nickelodeon has finally taken affect on the youth.  Making those 12-year-olds I mentioned earlier act like 9-year-olds.
- Also why the forget would you want to be covered in green slime.... ever....

Those last two may not actually have anything to do with this.  But I thought I'd mention them anyway.

I always rage when I fired a rifle and for no reason suddenly aimed 60° NEXT TO THE loving TARGET which resulted in not killing him

While it's quite satisfying and interesting to see this kind of discussion, there's only one problem; nobody's going to do anything. People have said it already, but still. A hundred players could (and probably will) read this, get inspired, start building, and bail out after the first baseplate. It's great that so many folks are interested and want to be active or want to do something or see that there's a problem, but the final outcome is still the same, and nothing changes. It really goes without saying that whatever "change" comes will be a single server or two that's short-lived at best.

On the other hand, if the thread's goal is only to alert people to this perceived issue instead of actually getting them to do something, then you've done all that you wished and (hopefully) more. However, it's a foolish thing to get one's hopes up on the internet.

TL;DR It's a good thought and a great discussion but personally I don't think anything is going to really change for all that's been said. Thanks

bushido you forgot the TF2 crap

Oh god... How did he miss it...

Oh god... How did he miss it...
cos he was only focusing on css.

I agree with this. The No-More-Port-Forwarding update now allows foolish and unintelligent children/teens to host their own servers. It sucks; yes, I'll clog up the server list with stuffty servers, but, I guess everyone has the right to host their own server. I believe the hosts of the stuffty servers will eventually improve from game experience and slowly improve themselves and their server too. So, I guess that's bad and good, depending on your aspect.

I really enjoyed reading this. Your rage especially makes me realize that your points are valid. haha

Lol YOUR GUNS SUCK THEY HAVE TO MUCH RECOIL WHEN THEY FIRE THERE TOO SMALL MAKE THEM SMALLER
TACTIAL IS TOO EVERYDAY NAME IS TIER PLASTIC

This is what i captured from this topic

Well, you obviously have some mental incapability.. so that doesn't surprise me.

I never see any TDMs under your name, why not give originality a try and create the next big thing for us; be the one to shine the light of originality for future generations to come.

Bushido has been creating stuff-ton of mint servers over the years. Where have you been?

I have too tried my hand at the first GSF Terrain TDM, which is rather popular.  Seein that, I'd suggest people to make TDMs with legitimate GSF maps, because that is the future.  I designed my entire game around the bricks, not the idea.

GSF Terrain is for nothing good except for vehicle TDMs and vehicle TDMs are not the optional TDM. They tend to end with just "long vehicle transportation and death on arrival" stuff. The majority of the combat will still take place outside of the vehicle and thus vehicles are just a secondary matter when it comes down to the actual TDM. Consequently the TDM no longer actually can be called a vehicle TDM as the vehicles are just dead time.

We are stuck in this rut because terrain was removed, which allowed for seemingly unlimited room to build whatever.

What the fudge. No, the problem with stuffty servers has always been. The removal of terrain is more of a blessing.

Blockand has horrible jump physics for a tactical shooter mini-game and no one, no loving one can argue with that. Usually people try to tune down the jump crouch bullstuff by lowering the jump height.

That's the thing about Blockland. It is it's own genre of shooter. Which is why it also can be so fun.

It's idiotic to adapt the game to fit as tactical shooters by, for example, lowering the jump height or some stuff. You have to adapt your server to the game not the opposite.

bushido you forgot the TF2 crap

He did not forget it you dofus.

Now, directing myself at Bushido.

The topic title is very ambiguous. I thought you would cover every server with your text but you're pretty much just talking about how people suck at using your weps and that cs in blockland suck richard. Change the title or some stuff and edit it when you've got more to show.

You should have a manual for your wep packs. Do you have it already? Enforce it more.

Skill's build is one of the prettiest things ever and I enjoyed the map. The only thing is the size yes. He made a replica of cs_office and thus it is not suitable for blockland. It may not be the best balanced arena for blockland, but really.. it's one heck of a good one.

I'm working on a multipurpose map (most likely an attacker vs defender TDM with a capture point) and I would like your help balancing and designing it. Bottlenecks, multiple routes, defensive points.. you name it. And of course weapons and other implements. I may be a bit low in progress regarding the build at the moment tho, but ples say yes

Bushido, have my children. I agree with this, I tried doing the tactical counter strike like DMs a while ago. It just doesn't work.

Bushido, don't you own tier tactical? Why don't you make those changes then? (e.g scary grenades)

Holy motherforget, lots of replies.

landscapes aren't required to have a good on-foot TDM

for vehicle TDMs, sure, but vehicle TDMs are buggy as stuff. until that gets fixed you're better off making smaller-scale, interior-style DMs
and even then GSF is definitely not the wave of the future, forget's sake: people can and have used terrain bricks for almost everything. there's no finesse with GSF. if you're gonna do anything on-foot you're better off using just standard ol' default bricks, with maybe a few things from phydeoux for detailing

They are not required, but they are our solution to ending the repetitiveness.  Your entire rant is aimed at the unoriginality in builds, which spurns from the lack of terrain, mathematically speaking.  One distinct map can hold many different types of games, such as a snowy map able to hold games from Russian TDMs to hide-and-go-stab-the-forget-out-of-everyone-while-hiding-in-snow-piles.  Thus, one map can include many varied types of games, but there were multiple maps.  This made for a lot of game types and variations.  Since terrain was removed, Blocklanders had to resort to three types of environments: Brickscape, GSF, or interior (aka buildings).  Brickscape is only good for relatively flat, even surfaces; certainly not for the large, vast, grande environments that can be made with GSF.  Interior builds are all unoriginal, as they usually take place in a factory or warehouse, or have to include barriers to keep people from leaving the flat surfaces.  They are all the same, and that's why you think there are no good TDMs around anymore, because people are using interior-type games a lot.  This is why GSF is the future, because it would allow for good, large environements capable of being original.

bushido come play plastic-trike: frisbee

the rant was originally directed at racerboy and skill4life for their dogstuff server that i can see potential in but is getting forgeted up by not only their incompetence but al-

that's racerboys server not mine
i just made the map, he wanted to use it so i let him
dont you bring me into this you butt

It would be nice if people made tdm/dm's that aren't loving css, cod, bf3, tf2 or some gimmicky ass piece of stuff.
