Author Topic: My parents are skeptical about me hosting.  (Read 4348 times)

My parents are a bit paranoid when it comes to opening ports on our network. They're afraid that we might get hacked. Does anyone have any evidence that might put them at ease? I know that it's highly unlikely that we'll get hacked, but any input or statistics will be helpful.

Also, please keep it clean. I plan on showing them this topic.

tell your parents to chill out, the likelyhood of being hacked is low, if not, lots of people would make topics about it

Hello, parents of Anikan 911.

All port forwarding does is redirecting the connection of ports to specific network addresses.

So basically, if you port forward Blockland, you make your router connect to the master server through a port (port 28000 is the most common.).

Port forwarding does not open your Internet to hacking because it has nothing to do with your firewall or security.

Port forwarding, if done correctly, is completely safe.

you're not sending a letter, but anway, being hacked is unlikely, although you might get ddos'd

Also there is absolutely no reason for someone to hack a home computer.
The hacker doesn't gain anything, would be a waste of time

And if someone really REALLY wants to hack your computer he will find a different way.

you're not sending a letter
Jeez, he's planning on showing his parents the thread.

Chill.

yeah, but its more like a letter than a post

You could get that if you didn't have your ports opened. What does it matter?

I don't know how to say this without being rude, so I'm just going to be rude.  Your dad shovels coal for a living and I am a goddamn professional computer programmer.  I know more about this subject than your dad.  Port forwarding, if done correctly, is completely safe.

Although port forwarding doesn't make this any more or less likely.

Buu, port forwarding has nothing to do with DOS.

Or DDOS, which would never happen.

Who would want to program a bunch of computers to attack an individual home's network. That's beyond stupid.

Back in 2008 I tried hosting and by opening my ports over 600 people tried to gain access to my network within a 5 minute time period.  None of them got through and I've now been hosting for 4 years without a single attack.

You could get that if you didn't have your ports opened. What does it matter?

I wouldn't use that older quote if he's showing his parents this.

Uhh i think in v12 or somthing there was update that you now longer need to portforward to host a bl server, i never had portforwarded and i still can host a bl server.

One time I portforwarded, and I was hacked by some guy in Germany. He downloaded all of my passwords on to his hacking device, stole all of my files, and replaced my desktop background with goatse. It is a highly risky process...

Haha very funny.

Well that was a different method of networking. But yeah, it works on some routers.
