Wouldn't the GPU begin using system RAM once its dedicated RAM is completely full?

Yeah.

Wouldn't the GPU begin using system RAM once its dedicated RAM is completely full?

yeah but remember ddr5 vs ddr3.
its a stuffty downclock and now wasting resources

So, ever since I bought my case back in July I've had this problem with the side panel rattling whenever the GPU fan speeds up. Today I got fed up with the noise and so I went out and bought this:

These weather strips are supposed to be used for windows and doors, but I figured it'd work for case doors as well. It does look very thick but it actually compresses a lot since it's so porous.

And the patient in question:

For some reason I thought the gap between the panel and the case was much bigger than this, but gotta soldier on I guess.

I decided to put the strips on the side panel since I figured they'd be torn off by the mounting tabs if I were to stick them on the case itself.

Cut the first piece.

Stuck on the front edge of the panel.

Did the back as well.

Aaaand done. I put a few strips on the top and bottom as well as added some more at the back.

Now, the question is, does it fit?

It does take a little brute force (and swearing), but in the end it slides into place.

And now for the big question, did it work? Why yes it does! Before the mod the case would sound like a Lada on a dirt road whenever I played any games, and now I can't hear a thing except for regular fan noise. 10/10 would recommend.

Well the good thing is that you have a GPU, the bad thing is it only has 126 MB of Vram. At minimum settings I think you could play it at an average of 40 FPS.

Ok thanks.

Do I see a null modem? I didn't think those existed nowadays.

Looks more like a DVI-to-VGA converter

oh the thing on it yea

I need some last minute advice before I begin purchasing the parts to my next PC.

How's this? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kdVsxr

The GPU isn't on there because I haven't decided on what GPU I want yet.

Knock the PSU down to a 550-600w PSU, you won't need more for any single-GPU configuration. Use the money you cut off that to broaden your GPU options.

For example; http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Tokthree/saved/#view=sZgKHx, PSU is strong enough for the average user who is running this kind of build, won't cause any problems and it gives you an extra $60 to put towards a GPU. Futureproofing is good but it's not like a larger PSU is going to be an expensive upgrade, if limiting your upgradeability in the future can give you better performance in the here and now then I'd say go for it and upgrade the PSU when you need it.

You're right about the PSU veing way overkill for his needs, but I wouln't recommend  Corsair CX PSU for something as exspensive as this. Their performance isn't too bad, but the capacitors are Chinese crap that I wouldn't count on lasting more than two or three years. He could get a good 450-500W PSU (yes, that's actually all you need, even for overclocking) for only a few dollars more which would easily last 5+ years.

I've been meaning to retire my potato. How's this?

I'm going to use my current fans, PSU, optical drive, peripherals, display, network card and I will use a Compaq Deskpro case which is loving massive. I doubt that this won't fit in there.

First of all, are you sure your PSU is capable of handling a new system this powerful? Second of all, get an i5 instead of an i7 and move up to a GTX 970. It's a lot better.

I feel like a PSU around 750 watt is almost pointless.... You want more than that for any reasonable multi-GPU configuration, and that's more than powerful enough for a single GPU system. :/

Alright, a few criticisms:
- As Georges already pointed out, the i7 is a waste of money compared to an i5. You won't notice any difference in 99% of programs.
- You don't need a $250+ motherboard unless you're doing watercooling and extreme overclocking, anything between $100 and $150 will be fine.
- Get more RAM, 8 gigs should be fine. Getting faster RAM, too; while it doesn't make a huge difference in games, it's not much more expensive, either
- Seagate hard drives have a pretty bad rep for failure reps IIRC, I'd go for WD instead.
- Get an SSD for the OS + games (you'll thank me for this)
- Get a 970 with the money you saved on the processor and motherboard

Okay, it might be a little over budget, but if you're not too concerned about speed you can get a 3TB WD Green for about $60 less than the 2TB Black. Also if you want to overclock right away you can get a CM 212 EVO for $30.

Also, mind if I ask what PSU you have? I just want to make sure it's powerful enough to run all of this.

yup. I dropped the 4790k to a 4690k and I had enough money to swap out the 960 for a 970.
