Question, why I can't I switch between surround and extended desktop once I have 2 cards? Extended desktop shows a blank screen and surround works but I hate using surround for default UI.

Guys, my computer is freezing up while i'm playing games. Like the keyboard and mousepad freeze up, but all the programs and stuff run like nothing is happening. I could be playing Blockland and then I will just freeze up. My Blockhead will run and/or jump and shoot in the small direction until I put my laptop to sleep and wake it back up. This happens to me in all games.

None of us know what this is, as far as I know that's a hardware issue/failure seeing how a lot of people have had this problem.

so, a nice upgrade is around 900$ for parts that aren't overkill and isn't overpriced but is still super expensive for me. I can't win. :(

HD 7970 is around $430 but the cpu and the cooler is decently priced, along with a 1 tb hd and 2 more sticks of 8 gb ram (16 gb total). I have a nice motherboard so I don't need to upgrade that

How do people use this crap? I copied 14gb of files to my desktop windows side, it took about 5-8 minutes. I copied the exact same files (drive to .local) through linux and it took over 3 hours. I have a 3570k @ 3.4, what's happening? Is there a way to check if there's a ram or cpu core limit for ubuntu to use at any given time?

There could be hundreds of reasons. Do you have proprietary drivers installed for an AMD or NVIDIA card? How fast does your drive benchmark? I could go on.
As for the "Windows transfers files faster" issue, the NTFS-3G driver for Linux is forgetstuff horrible and can only transfer up to 40MB/s irregardless of hardware. Use vFAT for a storage partition and use that to transfer files between Linux and Windows, it works much better in my experience.
Either way, I couldn't recommend Ubuntu to anyone at all. My experience with it is less than satisfactory. Mandriva and Fedora seem to be much better "user-friendly" Linux distros.
