Damn, I was looking it up and my old PC weighed around 40 pounds.
Talk about a massive PC :/

swapping out all my desktop and iPad tablet for a 128GB Surface Pro because simplicity is the way my mind runs.

If I apply thermal paste incorrectly and then turn on my computer, will my computer auto-shutdown when it senses the CPU is overheating? Could there be dmg?

No, all you really need to do with the thermal paste is rub it around the cpu and put the fan on. I don't think it would do that. I also doubt that

The PC will auto-shutdown yes.

Applying thermal paste is hard to mess up btw so I doubt thats any issue.

Yes it shuts down automatically if it over heats to prevent it from being damaged. Technology!

Anyway I never ever seen anyone forget up when they are applying thermal paste.

The max temperature for your cpu is probably somewhere above 100 C. Strictly speaking, your cpu should never ever go above 80 C for daily use. Too little or two much paste will only cost you a few degrees but you should always monitor your temps with coretemp or speedfan if you're unsure.
