Well unless you're running 4 Titans overclocked you won't be needing a 1000 watt PSU.

why did you go for an older processor/mobo
and a 770 isn't much more than a 670

as long as you are running a single video card at once (as most people do) you wont be needing above 550w. with the 770, you should be able to run most things high or even max. including blockland with ports shader mod

If I were him, just upgrade to a higher grade PSU just to be safe.  Plus if he buys a bigger one now, it allows him to upgrade in the future for a lesser cost.  I would recommend 750 watt.  Would allow much more room for improvement down the road in the long run.

a high end gpu consumes 300watts MAX. + cpu and other stuff = ~500w at maximum output. 550w is far from the "unsafe" area. he even has lots of room with overclocking. plus the 770 consumes 250w max and not 300w anyway.

You're not thinking this through, understand the fact that he would save much more money if he upgraded now and didn't have to worry about it in the future, besides that he can be prepared if he were to do a major unexpected upgrade such as the CPU if it were to need replacing.

Edit:  You also have to account for capacitor degradation over time as use continues on the computer.  If you max out the PSU now he can never expand regardless of that 50watt boundary or whatever logic you're using.

You're not thinking this through, understand the fact that he would save much more money if he upgraded now and didn't have to worry about it in the future, besides that he can be prepared if he were to do a major unexpected upgrade such as the CPU if it were to need replacing.

the newest gen intel cpus consume even less power. the only case in which he wouls need more wattage is if he gets another video card, which seems unlikely anyway.

he can always expand, all newest gen video cards and cpus consume less power than previous gen
and note - his system will probably consume around 400. my prediction of 500 is at MAX power, which would probably only occur in short spikes anyway

2 things - I would recommend a wd1003fzex wd black 1tb hard drive instead, and you should get 2x4gb ram instead, so the ram ran in dual channel mode
and just to clarify, ~550w should be enough for your system unless you plan on getting a second video card

Just to clarify to you, I actually just showed the posts to my teacher in class at college.  He says to definitely do a 750watt as he had a friend using a 500watt PSU and a high end GPU and it would cause his house lights to dim and the computer to shut down his computer randomly.

To Eksi, you can either listen to Titanium Man or you can listen to me who is an IT student for Applied Sciences in Computer Information Technology and I have verified with my teacher your PSU choice and he said it's a good idea to upgrade to 750watt.
