Not having money is not a problem, I have enough money to get something. How about $400?

How well do i3's perform?

nobody seems to talk about i3s, atleast what ive seen
for comparison, they are similar to the fx-6300

i3s are usually around 100 dollars

leaving 300 dollars for a mobo and a gpu
you could cheap out and get some absolutely no-frills mobo for 50, leaving you 250 for your gpu

nobody talks about i3s because everyone thinks they're irrelevant
which they're kinda right, get a quad core if you plan on keeping this build for a while even if you have to get a cheaper gpu

Seriously considering going for a Radeon GPU for my next build. Something that's around the GTX 980's level of performance. Any advice?

Where's that smack down gif?
Right here:

The GTX 750Ti is pretty amazing for such a cheap and small video card.

Why would you even get an AMD card besides for cheaper builds?

Also, there isnt a card that even reaches the 970 and 980s power, unless you get the 295x, but that thing is way more expensive than both of them, and the power is almost equal to 980.

-snip-

Might as well put in a 980 instead of a 780 if you're going to as far as a Haswell-E build.

its a really good budget card, I have it myself

will my mobo ground out on this case? here's a pic of the interior:

the only brass standoff is in the middle, so i'm afraid it's gonna ground out.

What do you mean ground out, like be electrically grounded or short out?
