Eyyyyy me too

Why are GPU names so confusing? I mean the order of names and the peformance of them doesn't make any sense.
Well it does once you figure it out but when you do you think to yourself it makes no sense at all.
for nvidia:
first number is the series of card and also pertains to the date, second number is the sub-series, which pertains to performance
660 would be older than 760, and 680 or 690 should be better than both because the second number is higher

9xx is the current series, and 10xx is coming out soon

Yeah I figured that out today
Altrough the 9xx series peform much better on DirectX11 than the previous series.
But ofcourse a 690 would outpeform a 960 on older DirectX version.

AMD cards are p much the same.

all this talk is making my 780 ti feel kinda obsolete
despite the fact that it can still run brand spankin new games on highest settings just fine

when will be a good time to upgrade?

wait a year for another black friday and buy a new gpu if you really, really want a better one.

I am looking to buy a $500 computer build, with a kickass video card. I don't know much about computer parts and such, but I assume you guys do. Any recommendations / videos / http://pcpartpicker.com lists?
Please help me out.

You can't get much for $500, I'm sure we'll do what we can but don't go having unrealistic expectations. What's your current rig? What peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers) do you have already and don't need replacing? Do you have an OS you can use on it? HDD's you can use in it? Do you need a DVD drive? Do you need a wi-fi adapter card?

Remember to always tell us what you absolutely must have, already have and don't need replacing if you're asking for a partslist for a new PC

Hm. I have an OS, i have a monitor, I do not need a DVD drive, my current computer is a stuffty laptop, I don't have any Hard Drives, I can probably get Ethernet, I need at least 500 GB of storage, and a video card that is exceptionally good (good enough to run GTA at decent graphic settings).

You can screw open your laptop and take the HDD out and use it with your desktop.
Unless you still want some kind of portable computer and have to carry files from one place to another.

I can practically guarantee you that this will not be happening, a GTX 970 or equivalent will run you about $300 or whatever

Well, I do plan to keep this laptop for other purposes,  but I do want a desktop.

Uh, I think that I found a $150~ graphics card that can run GTA at all max except for like soft shadows..

Then you found magic, congratulations. That is, of course, unless you're talking about GTA IV and not GTA V

I quickly put this together and I also picked a case without a side window because the color combinations arent really... great
The 960 will do I guess. I couldve got a 380 but it tends to stutter sometimes. Also a 960 is more stable and uses less power. Also I love the thing Nvidia has such as shadowplay or nsync
The i3 does the job i guess. It has hyper threading so its basicly a quadcore.
Edit: might get some case fans tho. Im not sure the case comes with them

Comes with a 120 in the back. Should be good enough for a build like this since the negative air pressure should do the job of an intake. Gonna be a little dusty after a while but it isn't a big deal
