hit me with your best plane

I look as my plane is being taxied out of my Hangar, I am stunned thinking that I am being kicked out or sometihng. I ask the Engineer resposible for my Hangar. "What are they doing?" I look questionable until he points to a  F/A-22 Raptor being carried into the base. "Holy..." I look at the newly made  F/A-22 Raptor. "Pilot candy right here."

I get into the roosterpit and turn on the battery powered equipment. I smile as I hop out and ask the Engineer to do all possible checks on my new plane. I then get called to be debriefed by an officer.

"I suppose you were in the air during the explosions?" The officer eyed me, typing on his computer.

"Yes, sir. My EMC pods failed and so was my life support, I flew low and slowly so I didn't get killed." The officer nods.

"Hopefully you can give me information about those explosions?" He sits and I stand assertively. "Well, there was no warning sings on my radar. I suppose someone.. or something planted thes-..." I stutter, "These bombs before the attack." I sigh, "Just an educated guess, sir."

I sigh and walk towards the mess hall.
"Dear God. Leave it to the Stovies to steal our capital."

In parallel, I get called for debriefing as well.
"So, could you describe the whole battle in a few words?"
"We were called out to defend the capital from bombers. After a lenghty fight where we didn't manage jack stuff, it seemed the enemy battleship was retreating. But then suddenly, a series of explosions shot down most of our planes."
"What happened to your plane?"
"It got torn apart during the explosions."
"Could you, uh, describe these explosions better?"
"They came with no warning. My radar hadn't detected a missle or anything of the kind. In a matter of seconds, 3/5 of our planes were shot down or heavily damaged."
"I see. I heard our navy also took damage?"
"Yes. There was also a missle strike. Seven missles were launched toward the capital and our ships. Again, heavy damage was done."
"I see."
"Man, do those guys have firepower."
"That will do. You are free to go."

I change my mind and walk to the barracks.
"forget it, I'm sleeping. I'm tired, and I need whatever rest I can get."

Having nothing to do for the rest of the day, I took the time to check on the F-16 in the maintenance hangar. The ground crews worked pretty quickly. Most of the carbon buildup was wiped down, the nosecone was replaced, and they were already in the middle of replacing the engine. At some point it occurred to me that I wasn't going to pilot her anymore, and shortly walked out after.

The sun was already setting. I took out a cigarette to enjoy the moment, but before I put it in my mouth I decided against it, and placed it back inside the box.

Before I fell sleep the only thing I remember thinking about was how my parents would react when they'd see the Stovies take over Gracemeria on the news.

I wonder if they cared.

I wake up and go to the mess hall(?), I then get the food and sit down to eat.

After inhaling my breakfast and washing up, I talk with a few commanding officers to arrange a roosterpit orientation session in the EF2000. They agree to schedule it for later this afternoon. I return to my barracks and start hitting the manuals and references.

Around two I met up with the ground crew chief in the hangar. "She's ready to go. I'll be here to supervise, signal to me if you need anything." I thank him, and do a quick walkaround inspection of the Typhoon. After making sure nothing is out of place, I climb into the roosterpit and close the canopy.

After taking a few moments to familiarize myself with the roosterpit, I gain startup clearance from the tower. As I'm going through the checklists, I can't help but gawk at how much glass there is inside the roosterpit. Even the buttons have LED screens, holy stuff.
