Murder is one thing. Crimes involving guns is another. 500,000 crimes involving guns occurred in 2005. There are definitely enough crimes for the entirety of New England to be lit up. So the chart in the OP may be correct.

Stop. The chart in the OP is blatantly false. Look at Louisiana, one of the worst murder rates by firearm in the country according to numerous 2011 data charts. Now according to the chart that was posted, it has a low crime rate. Doesn't add up.

The so called assault rifles that are availble on the civilian market are underpowdered and not as practical as the M16 and M4. For example in california the magazines are fixed and can only be removed with tools and you can only own 5 or 10 round magazines. As for the .223 projectile used in the your typical AR-15 will not always bring your target down after the first shot. Amnesty was granted to those with pre Assault Rifle man 30rnd magazines, but if you cop age doesn't matter and you most likely take away the 30rnd magazine. Personally for home defense I would use a shotgun for indoors because the pellets won't go through the walls like a rifle slug would. For the wide open rural areas I recommend a mini-14, AR-15s only appeal to rednecks and "tactical" call of duty scrubs.

Also the AR-15 can be converted into other rifles. This example here being a short hunting rifle.

Let's say we make guns illegal. The law-abiding citizens will throw away their guns.

However, the murderers and gangsters, who are NOT law-abiding citizens, will simply keep their guns and have an upper hand over the normal citizens. A semi-automatic rifle is not an "assault rifle" either. Know the difference. The media screws it up all the time.

And...? The point is that it is semi automatic. It will pump out lead as faster as your finger can press the trigger. A shotgun requires pumping, and a hunting rifle (bolt) requires you to rooster it, thus taking it more time to shoot.
