We do not require a handout. If we are given an FTL drive, we would take it apart, find ways to improve it, we would advance. We could carve our own future, independent of any gods or masters. When you are lagging behind with your obsolete "magic" the other races will continue to advance. They will reap the stars, other galaxies even, and you will continue to piss about with a bunch of giant, incredibly obvious and easy to destroy, red crystals.
