and removing genres will only lead to annoyance when looking for a specific type of game.
again, this isn't what he is argueing for

in portal, do you shoot things until they stop moving? no. plus, it is literally impossible to make an mmorpgrtsfpsflightsimulator. you are overreacting. mixing genres is perfectly fine because otherwise, we would end up with too many genres for specific games which is silly when we can just mix them, and removing genres will only lead to annoyance when looking for a specific type of game.
He's asking for more specific genres from what I can read.

"until they stop moving" isn't a requirement for something to be an FPS, only first person perspective and shooting, also, saying it's literally impossible to make an mmorpgrtsfpsflight simulator is like saying it's impossible to make chocolate cookie dough icecream. I don't think anyone will have issues if people stopped calling things FPSs and described them based on something else other than "you shoot in first person."

very possible and easy to make chocolate cookie dough ice cream but that is clearly not your point so ill ignore that

after rereading, i see what you actually mean and it will likely only lead to complications by classifying games that way because fps, rpg, etc are vague because they refer to a large genre of games and having a bunch of subdivisions for an fps instead of just an fps is unneeded and allows for little exploration when looking for games of a specific genre.

sorry if there are any mistakes, foruming on phones is impossible radda radda

The thing is that FPS is based on a style of presentation and a single action, while RPG is based on the way in which you play the game. This ends up making the FPS genre so diverse that many of the games have very little in common, making it unreliable.

not unreliable, i don't think you know what unreliable means
it just allows for more exploration when you want to try something new, because it's so diverse and easy to find something interesting.
same goes for rpgs.

I is unreliable, the line between what is an FPS and what isn't is so blurred you could say that Wii sports is an FPS because it has archery. Asking for an FPS is like walking into a library and asking for a book that's hard bound, it's not differentiating on anything other than how the game is presented.

um, sa hard bound book is so vague that it is ridiculous

being vague is important sometimes but if you do that, it's like asking for sa game where you can move

wii sports is not an fps because it does not focus on shooting things until they stop moving, it is a based on sports, and having one event where you shoot things (not until they stop moving, i might add) does not make it a game of that genre.   assassin's creed 3 is not an rts, but it has one mission where you command troops in a war. when someone is looking for sa game, they look on what it's based on, not on one small part of the game is about.

i apologize for saying sa instead of a, this phone is ridiculous

Portal's main focus is puzzles, but it is still an FPS because it is in first person and involves shooting.

no it's not. It is a puzzle game and nothing more.

You are using the WASD, you have a portal device called the portal gun. You shoot energy which creates orange and blue portals. Lets call it a first person puzzler.

But why FPS/TPS and not just shooter?

Does the camera being behind the player change that much about the game to make it a completely different genre?

yes

never actually thought of that. another example of mixing genres, take notes fred

Why are people even debating this? Can't we just like them for what they are.

i thought it was a quaint debate minus a bit of slandering
