Author Topic: "FPS Absurdity" and the reason why genres based on presentation need to go.  (Read 4609 times)

Quote somebody, I have no idea who you are speaking to at this point.
are you serious

you're dumber than i thought you were, and that's saying something

normally i would berate myself for slander but you deserve it

Take that cork out of your ass and lighten up.

of course, im sorry for not knowing when you're joking even though you say stupid things that are so stupid all the time and i can never tell

yes
never actually thought of that. another example of mixing genres, take notes fred
It's mixing genres to the point that it's really just a puzzle game, the FPS aspect has almost nothing to do with the game. Again it's basing a genre off of presentation. Imagine if movies were labled like that, "I'm going to watch a wide angle movie!"

A very interesting and understandable argument.
It certainly is odd how Portal is an FPS.
And you described the difference between Battlefield and Call of Duty quite well in my opinion.
Of course some people won't like how you named their genre, but your arguments are quite good.

As for the removal of genres based on presentation, that would be great.
If you are searching for a First Person game where you shoot people, you don't really search for Portal in general.
Such things really need to be sorted out, but is more a problem with what genre the developers give their game.
Portal should be a puzzle game, but with the recent release of multiple puzzle games where you control a character, i think there should be a genre for that.

I don't think the current genres will be changed a lot, but i would certainly support it.

once again, you're overgeneralizing things. there is nothing wrong with basing genres off of presentation.

except portal isn't an fps

Blockland is a FPS too.
Isn't FPS usually reserved to games that are strictly first-person, while Blockland can toggle? Also, how do I shot brick?

What makes Call of Duty an FPS while Portal isn't? Both are in first person and revolve around firing a projectile. CoD has explosions and Portal has portals, but they are both in first person and use projectile firing mechanics, so they are both FPSs. Presentation has very little to do with a game, since many different kinds of games can be presented similarly.

Isn't FPS usually reserved to games that are strictly first-person, while Blockland can toggle? Also, how do I shot brick?
Which brings me to:
But why FPS/TPS and not just shooter?

Does the camera being behind the player change that much about the game to make it a completely different genre?
And why is this perspective only limited to shooters?
Are we going to call WoW an OCMMORPG (Orbiting camera)? Diablo an IRPG (isometric)? While calling Skyrim a FPRPG (First person), with the option of changing the genre entirely into TPRPG (Third person) with the press of a button?

If someone asks "is Skyrim an FPS?", i would say yes. When they bitch and laugh at me about how wrong i am, i will say "First Person Slasher".

You can go into first person perspective in Skyrim, and even shoot people till they stop moving. Game isn't strictly melee.

I just don't know why you are insulting me.
