What exactly makes bitcoins worth anything? There's no real money backing them, and they're just strings of data so they have no precious metal content... I'm not sure how these things would even work as money.

People use them to purchase stuff without exchanging info. Some people are willing to actually pay for these with money because you can use them to purchase unique services or products.
