The posts that get through now don't even serve any purpose for the spammer.  They're just stuff like "nice site! very inorfmatvei!" or copy-pastes of other posts from the internet.

I don't get it, what's the point of dedicating resources and effort to something that won't generate any cash at all?

Bayesian poisoning perhaps - literally just crap flooding everything so the statistics on what is considered spam get distorted and allow future spam to get through. 

It could also be a mapping probe, where first the bot spams all web forms it comes across with harmless looking statements like "nice site!" but it also includes some unique string of characters.  Then later it can crawl the site and look for that unique string and map a connection between that form and text being displayed.  The goal is to build up a list of easily spammable sites that can be exploited later.

Personally, I have noticed around the web that captchas in general are getting more difficult, to the point where I cannot solve them reliably.  Bots of course can try 50 times in a row without getting frustrated but I cannot.  Captchas are now doing the exact opposite of what they were intended to do. 

I thought spam companies were recruiting idiots to solve these for the bots through those "answer surveys for rewards" sites and similar things. Dunno if I read it somewhere or if it was just a guess, but I never actually looked. I can't read into the subject too much without wanting to throw living-room furniture through the windows of the people who do this kind of stuff.
