Author Topic: The word "friend" and "Gay"  (Read 1340 times)

Okay, I have a huge bloody problem. People keep getting pissed at people who use this term. The term is slang and not officially recognized by the English Dictionary other than slang. The correct term for these words was originally a bundle of sticks for friend and over joyous for gay. Society made the term refer to homoloveuals as both of these terms. If society can do that, then the slang definition of the word could also be changed to be idiotic or something such as this. As long as you are using the word's new incorrect definition - as society has already made - in a way that is not referring to a social group in a negative way, there should be no problem in using it. If people can just randomly change the correct definition of the word to something completely irrelevant, then I should be able to too.

what...
dude calm down

friend comes up in multiple dictionaries as a derogatory term for homoloveual, and gay comes up in every dictionary as homoloveual. You did no research.

Actually, the Term gay has always had 2 definitions since it was first created. As early as 1637, The word gay  is found in the Oxford English Dictionary as "addicted to social pleasures and dissipations" and  "Of loose and immoral life"
and it gay people of old times used th term long before it was used as an offense.

But that's a vintage term and it's not generally used like that anymore.

Please don't do that whole stuffty "yes I am gay because I'm HAPPY!" "no I'm not a friend because I'm not sticks LOL"
What are you 8?
Probably.

Right but my point is gay people most likely created the word amongst themselves or atleast as we can presume through history and literature.

I'd like to see that dictionary.

I know one more synonym for both of those words.
The OP

gee never heard this argument before

who's worse- impressionable young children who use gay to mean stupid, or people who yell incessantly whenever said children do

I don't have a dictionary but I have a source:

The Straight Dope? Can you get a site that doesn't have such an absurd name?

Never mind, his response was great.

I didn't know this term has been around for so long.

Were any of those words ever put into some official document?
